A WAAF's Story...© Wartime News
This account appeared in the November 2004 edition of Wartime News. The short story generated responses from several readers and the following letter reflects the thoughts of others..... Dear Editor, Just a short note to say how much I enjoy reading Wartime News. When it arrives everything else is put aside until I've read most of it. For some reason, the girls (if I am allowed to say that) get read first. The WAAF who went through the bomb damage to collect the collars and the blooded and dust covered girl on the counter, who asked her 'to come back tomorrow' . Yes, it was like that. We picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off and got on with it. The great thing with Wartime News is that it is written by the people who were actually there. Who actually did it! I read so much rubbish in so-called histories of WWII by alleged professional historians that..... well, I don't know! Two examples I recently read: Saturday September 2 1939. Poland remains under fire - with Luftwaffe JETS raiding the capital Warsaw, and another with a photo captioned, 'Lines of British and AMERICAN troops await evacuation from Dunkirk' May 1940. (The first American soldiers landed in Britain January 1942). How can one believe anything else these 'Historians' have written?
