Including D-Day Map (Produced for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day) In 1944, Great Britain and, in particular the south of England, was one gigantic armed camp. Here the Servicemen of the Allied Nations prepared for the forthcoming invasion of occupied Europe which would take place on D-Day, 6 June. The whole of the United Kingdom was intimately concerned with preparations for the Normandy battle, none more so than the deceptively peaceful county of Dorset. All three Services - the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force had units spread throughout the county. There were also many important civilian establishments, some highly secret, whilst our Allies, in particular the Americans and Canadians, were everywhere, bringing a transatlantic atmosphere to Dorset's quiet lanes and sleepy villages. The Dorset in Wartime map (produced for the 50th Anniversary) shows the locations of the most important military and civilian establishments. It also shows the main supply routes to the ports, Wemouth, Portland and Poole, which were the main embarkation points for the seaborne invasion, together with Tarrant Rushton airfield, which was to send the first wave of Horsa gliders of the 6th Airborne Division - the first Allied troops to land in Normandy.
